A a note to the reader responsibility within their respective organizations and have a workload that reflects the level of that responsibility one has a glimpse of just how great the motivation was that made this book possible the book is aimed at present and future rail professionals that is to say the sort of people who would be interested in our master s degree but equally at anybody interested in this subject.while attempting to be complete about the subject of railway signaling it can not claim to be exhaustive for the specialist reader as in many professions the vocabulary used may vary from one sector to the other this is particularly the case between urban and main lines or between traction and infrastructure for each chapter a choice has therefore been made to stay as close as possible to the terminology appropriate to the context however the most obvious differences are pointed out to the reader a general level of scientific and technical proficiency will be sufficient for readers to get the most out the more technical chapters since explanations are always given when terms and concepts specific to rail are introduced we hope that this will also be the sort of book that people will enjoy picking up and opening and that they will take pleasure in the quality of its illustrations finally although this book was born largely out of experience acquired in a french context from the start of the project onwards we have wanted it to be a book about rail systems everywhere not just in france to be read by non-french-speaking readers and this accounts for its bilingual format the book is divided into three parts and three volumes · the first part also the shortest deals with the environment of rail signalling it is aimed mainly at those with no specialized knowledge of those aspects of the environment which impact signalling general operating principles track and equipment electrification rolling stock etc are briefly described in this part with an emphasis on whatever may have an influence on signalling · the second part is the heart of the book covering the main functions of rail signalling beginning with the dangers that signalling is designed to protect against in our explanations we have attempted always to use the most generic terms and concepts possible alongside each function we describe the different technological solutions available at the present time together with those that either were or were not implemented in the recent past and where possible we try to provide an insight into where things are likely to go in the future this second part is about the principles that lie behind the realization of the different signalling functions and is not intended to give technical details which are covered in the third part · the third part is about how principles have been applied we look at the different products that have been employed and do not hesitate to go into technical detail where appropriate this is the part that would probably require the most updating if a second edition of the book were to appear in a few years time since necessarily it describes the state of things at the time of writing 2012 for this first edition here as throughout the book we do not limit discussion to products that are to be found in france and we cover signalling on conventional intercity rail networks as well as on urban metro systems and tram networks for practical reasons in particular to keep a reasonable size for each volume then book is divided in three volumes the volume 1 includes the first part and the beginning of the second part up to the signalling as seen by the driver the volume 2 includes the remainder of the second part and the volume 3 corresponds to the third part even though this book is the work of professionals and therefore as precise as possible it is clearly not meant to replace the regulatory texts and official reference documents that rail professionals may need to consult

A note to the reader by walter schön cooordinator of the book t his book in three volumes is the fruit of collaborative work by academics involved in teaching two signalling modules as part of the specialized systèmes de transports ferroviaires et guidés rail and guided transport systems master s degree the purpose of this master s created in 2008 is to provide young engineers working for major companies including in construction operation infrastructure management and certification or for regulatory authorities linked to the rail industry with a solid grounding in all aspects of rail transport whatever these engineers go on to specialize in later before the course existed this grounding was usually acquired either through professional experience almost always specialized in a particular domain and thus not imparting an all-round rail culture or through the pursuit of a personal interest rail transport is one of those areas that tend to interest people passionately or alternatively to turn them off there was therefore a real need for this kind of course in particular in a country like france where educational philosophy has traditionally been to turn out engineers with a good general proficiency in some domain such as electronics or mechanics who would then acquire more specialized skills once they found themselves in a particular workplace this is very different from germany for example and particularly from the former gdr where entire universities are devoted to the education of transport engineers consequently at the initiative of fif fédération des industries ferroviaires a representative body for the french rail industry a number of french engineering high schools grandes écoles d ingénieurs were approached with a view to creating a professional qualification aimed essentially at young engineers already working in or hoping to work in the rail sector the intention at the outset was that the course should be taught both by academics from grandes écoles and by professionals from the rail sector and also that the course should go beyond a purely french perspective a number of heterogeneous teaching groups thus came to be formed around the different modules of the course bringing together personnel from major infrastructure managers and manufacturers along with academics with the joint aim of transmitting their knowledge as objectively as possible to future generations i have had the good fortune to head the group responsible for teaching the two signalling modules as one would have predicted since this is an area that people tend to be passionate about the group has proved to be especially dynamic and constructive its members have not hesitated to put aside particular preoccupations that otherwise might have put them in competition with one another and to pool their knowledge in the interests of creating highly successful modules early on the idea was raised of perpetuating the group s work in the form of a book there was in fact a real need for a book on the subject since the only reference work roger rétiveau s celebrated la signalisation ferroviaire was out of print and in any case not up to date with developments over the last twenty years and not including any reference to signalling in urban transport systems such as metros and tram networks the excellent cohesion and constructive spirit of the group made the book a reality the production of the book took place over a period of many months during which time authors regularly contacted one another moreover when one considers that most of the authors are in positions
